COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Blind students from across South Carolina will be competing in the Braille Challenge in Columbia.

The event is in its fourth year and will be held Thursday at the State Library's Talking Book Services Library.

The reading, writing and spelling competition is open to first through 12th grade students and is designed to get blind students motivated to study Braille.

The system of raised dots designed to help the blind communicate was created nearly 200 years ago by Louis Braille.
