IRMO, SC (WACH) -  Some elementary students in Irmo got a hands-on lesson in gardening Friday.

The outside-the-classroom learning was part of the Gordon's Garden program which is designed to educate students about healthy eating.  Irmo Elmentary School students worked together to create a new garden and planted vegetables like cabbage, collard greens and various types of lettuce.

South Carolina has one of the highest obesity rates in the country and the organization wants to help change that.

“We are here to help encourage the students at Irmo Elementary School to learn how to plant fresh fruits and fresh vegetables so that they learn how to make healthier eating choices which in turn will keep them from becoming obese,” said program director Joan Mobley.

The program is linked to the Auntie Karen Foundation which is teaming with the Back to Eden organization to promote healthy living.
