Beloved coach dies after hitting wayward horse

SUMMERTON,SC (WACH) - Friday morning, when faculty, students and staff arrived at Scott's Branch High School, theyfound out that one of their own had passed on.

Ladies' basketball coach Ruth Coard died in a car accident Thursday night after she ran her car into a wayward horse on Hwy.378 near highway 763 just east of Sumter.

Scott's Branch athletics director Leonard Johnson praised Coard, calling her an inspiration.  Johnson said,"Ms. Cookie meant so much (to the school), especially the girls.  She helped them through their transition into young adulthood."
The School cancelled all athletic events for the weekend.
