COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Area high school students got a history lesson in front of the big screen Tuesday.
Hundreds of Junior ROTC students around the Midlands met as a group for a private screening of the new movie "Red Tails" at the Sandhills 12 theater.
The movie showcases the Tuskegee Airmen and their contribution to America's efforts in World War II. Cadets like C.A. Johnson High School senior Cierra Milhouse have been studying African-American impacts in the military and say it has influenced them to keep the tradition going. Milhouse plans to join the Coast Guard after graduation.
"They were led by Benjamin O'Davis Jr. They are famous for never losing a bomber during a mission."
C.A. Johnson High School Senior Aerospace Science Instructor Walter Watson said he would not be an Air Force veteran without the Airmen.
"Tuskegee Airmen are very important to me because as I wear these wings, I would not have been able to earn these wings had it not been for several people in the Tuskegee Airmen."
School districts involved in the activity included Richland 1,2,5 as well as Lexington 5.
