ST. STEPHEN, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say that human bones have been found in a rural area of Berkeley County.

The remains were found Wednesday by a person collecting cans and bottles to recycle.

County sheriff's spokesman Dan Moon says the remains were found in the area of the Rediversion Canal linking Lake Moultrie to the Santee River.

Coroner Bill Salisbury says that it will likely be some time until the remains are identified.

Moon said it would be pure speculation to say the bones are those of a St. Stephen man whose pickup truck was found abandoned in the area two years ago.
