COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The University of South Carolina is keeping the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alive across the Midlands by hosting a series of commemorative events.

The Rev. Willie M. Bolden, pastor of Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta, was the main speaker at the University's annual commemorative breakfast held this morning at The Zone at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The event, entitled "Empowerment Through Involvment," brought the community together to celebrate the life and legacy of the Civil Rights leader.

Bolden, who was a part of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference for eight years serving in various capacities under Dr. King and later under Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, shared stories of his relationship with Dr. King.

“I was there involved in marching with Dr. King, being beaten with Dr. King, going to jail and who can better tell the story than someone who was actually in involved,” said Bolden.

Bolden is spreading his message of empowerment through service because he says that is what Dr. King did for him.

The University of South Carolina's celebration of Dr. King's life will also include a concert by the USC Gospel Choir on Jan. 15 and a day of service on Jan. 16.
