COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Mitt Romney is hitting back against attacks on his time at the helm of private equity firm Bain Capital.

The GOP presidential front-runner is rolling out a TV ad in South Carolina that argues that he helped create and run a company that invested in struggling businesses, grew new ones, and rebuilt old ones, creating thousands of jobs.

The ad calls him a conservative businessman and singles out successful national chains including Staples and the Sports Authority.

The commercial also quotes the Wall Street Journal saying that Romney's GOP opponents were embarrassing themselves by attacking him on this issue.

It's a slap at Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry, who have castigated Romney on Bain.
