COLUMBIA (WACH)--South Carolina is fourth in the nation for senior citizens facing food insecurity.
Harvest Hope Food Bank has created two programs to help feed those seniors who are often neglected in our communities.
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program
Gives thousands of low-income South Carolinians access to healthy food.
As part of the program, the USDA ships items directly to the food bank, including fruits, vegetables and cold cereals.
Eligibility is based on age, income and state residency. Interested individuals must apply in-person at a participating site.
Totes of Love Program
Provides free, monthly food assistance to help low-income senior citizens.
Each box contains about a week's worth of non-perishable food and is delivered along with milk and fresh produce when available.
Currently, food boxes are distributed to 23 qualifying senior clients in Chesterfield County.
The food box deliveries provide not only nourishment for the body but also a kind visit that warms the heart.
