COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Motorcycle riders packed the Statehouse lobby and heard Gov. Nikki Haley say she would veto any law requiring them to wear helmets.

The motorcycle rights group ABATE's annual rallies are a fixture of opening days for the Legislature.

Tuesday's rally occurred while a proposal from Greenville Sen. Ralph Anderson would make riders older than 21 wear helmets. The law now requires helmets for people under 21.

Haley told a crowd of more than 150 people gathered outside her office that the measure would be a waste of time because she would veto it.

Haley is a member of the ABATE chapter in Lexington County.

She told the crowd she hoped they would tell legislators to spend time putting more of the state's bureaucracy into a Cabinet agency she controls.
