An apartment fire in Columbia on Sunday evening has left 5 homeless.

COLUMBIA (WACH) – The Richland-Columbia Fire Department responded to a fire in the 3700 block of West Avenue in Columbia on Sunday evening, according to Columbia Fire Department Spokesman Brick Lewis.  Lewis said that there was over $50,000 in damages and 5 people were displaced as a result of the fire.

The Red Cross was on scene to help with the displaced citizens.  Lewis reported no injuries in the blaze, the cause of which is under investigation.

UPDATE: According to Chief Aubry Jenkins, the cause of the fire has been determined to be "displaced smoking materials."  Chief Jenkins said the there were 2 residents of the apartment where the fire started, who were treated at the scene.  The Red Cross and the property management company are assisting the displaced residents.
