COLUMBIA (WACH) - A Columbia man who is already incarcerated on multiple charges at Richland County's Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center is now being served multiple warrants by Forestry Commission law enforcement officers.
Don Antwain Wright, 19, of Columbia is charged with four counts of breaking forest rules and regulations related to a series of vehicle break-ins at the Commission’s Harbison State Forest on Broad River Road. The breaking and entering charges were filed by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
According to a spokesman with the Forestry Commission, Wright traveled down the long gravel road of Harbison State Forest several times in early September and broke into cars and trucks located in an inner-forest parking lot.
Wright was trespassing the moment he passed the office and the fee boxes, where he would have been required to pay a parking fee or obtain a State Forest Use Permit.
Among the vehicles targeted were three trucks and a car. Stolen from the vehicles were several specialty tools, a tool box, clothes, shoes, iPods, mountain biking gear, backpacks, and purses. In addition to these belongings, Wright also stole the cell phone and wallet belonging to the spouse of a Columbia-area federal agent.
The forest is routinely patrolled not only by Forestry Commission officers, but also by officers with the City of Columbia, and deputies with Richland County.
The Forestry Commission and its cooperating agencies take public safety and security very seriously and will enforce all laws on this forestland aggressively.
