MIAMI, FL (WACH) - West Virginia scored the most points by any team in college bowl history, defeating Clemson 70-33 Wednesday night in the Orange Bowl.
"That was probably as bad as a defensive performance as I've seen in a long, long time," said Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney.
The Mountaineers racked up 593 yards of total offense compared to 440 for Clemson. The Tigers also turned the ball over four times, including a backbreaking fumble by Andre Ellington in the second quarter that completely changed the game. Darwin Cook scooped up the ball and raced 99 yards for a touchdown to give West Virginia a 28-17 lead. The rout was on after that.
Swinney said, "Is it a lack of focus that a guy fumbles the ball going in for a touchdown, does that mean the other 10 guys aren't focused? We just didn't make some plays."
Clemson Quarterback, Tajh Boyd says its time to go back to the drawing board and push forward for next season.
"Definitely a tough loss, but you got to get over it," said Boyd "you have to get over it quick, because when we go back to school that's when the off season starts so, it's back in the film room, back trying to figure out ways to improve your game."
The ACC Champion Tigers finish the season 10-4. West Virginia is 10-3.
