COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- The Richland County Sheriff's Department is holding a memorial service for a police dog killed in the line of duty.

The service for Fargo is scheduled for Thursday at the Sheriff Department's Headquarters in Columbia at noon.

Fargo was a Belgian Malinois. He was shot three times and killed as he and Master Deputy Warren Cavanagh hunted for a robbery suspect last week.

Sheriff Leon Lott says Fargo joined the force in 2006 and was trained in narcotics detection, tracking and criminal apprehension.

Lott says Fargo's death has prompted an outpouring of calls from citizens seeking to donate funds and provide armored vests for dogs in the K9 unit.
