COLUMBIA (WACH) - Columbia police officers have arrested a man they say killed a woman in her home Monday afternoon.

Officials have charged 44-year-old Michael Peterson with murder.

Investigators say Peterson killed 54-year-old Brenda Witherspoon in her home at 2947 English Avenue, near Two Notch Road.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has ruled Witherspoon's death a homicide, but did not give a cause of death. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.

Peterson is being held at the Richland County jail. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
