COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Some leading South Carolina Republicans are irked after the state GOP backed out of paying for most of the first-in-the-South presidential primary.

The broken promise means the state Election Commission is seeking a taxpayer bailout after the GOP said it wouldn't pay for more than half the $1.5 million tab.

State Republican Party Executive Director Matt Moore said a Nov. 22 Supreme Court decision in a case challenging the state's authority to run the primary means the GOP can't put money into the contest.

The court decision cleared the way for the state to run the primary but steered clear of financing issues.

Republican state Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort said the GOP has an obligation to follow through on covering the costs.
