CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The Savannah River Maritime Commission plans to appeal a South Carolina water quality permit that allows expansion of the Savannah port by dredging the river.

Chairman Dean Moss said the panel agreed Friday to file the appeal in the state's Administrative Law Court. He said the appeal will be filed Monday.

The panel's decision comes a day after the Southern Environmental Law Center also appealed to the Administrative Law Court, alleging the Department of Health and Environmental Control improperly approved the permit.

A state Senate committee on Thursday determined, by a party-line vote, that Gov. Nikki Haley did not pressure DHEC to approve the dredging permit.

The Savannah River Maritime Commission was created by state lawmakers four years ago to represent South Carolina's interests on the river, including dredging.
