COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) -- Incarcerated teens at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice are building a home as a Habitat for Humanity project.
D.J.J held a ceremony when the project began on December 2nd.
Monday the first gentlemen Michael Haley stopped by to help.
"They've got a lot of some making up to do, but doing projects like this, helps them, helps give back to the community and I tell them time and time again that we aren't in this world alone. We have to help each other and service is a part of doing that," said Haley.
The frame of the house will be built within the security fence on the detention facility grounds.
Once completed, cranes will lift the frame over the fence and take it to the permanent location.
The house will then be finished by supervised D.J.J teens and the community.
The home will go to a woman and her 17 year old son who has Cerebral Palsy.
They currently live in an apartment that is not equipped to handle her son's wheelchair.
Their new Habitat home will have wide doors, a wheelchair ramp, and a handicapped accessible shower.
