COLUMBIA (WACH) - Two Democratic members of the state senate committee investigating the Department of Health and Environmental Control Board ruling to allow dredging along the Savannah River are calling for Governor Nikki Haley and her staff to answer questions about what role they played in the decision.
The request was sent to media outlets in an e-mail from Phil Bailey of the Senate Democratic Caucus. According to the email, Sen. Brad Hutto (D-Orangeburg) showed the Senate Medical Affairs Committee a letter from Rep. Boyd Brown (D-Winnsboro), which details a conversation between Brown and Katherine Veldran of the governor's staff. According to Rep. Brown, Veldran describes the DHEC decision as "the best decision we've made since we've been in office."
“The Medical Affairs Committee needs to hear from Ms. Veldran and the rest of Governor Haley’s staff. They say publicly that their involvement with DHEC was limited but the account from Representative Brown paints a very different picture,” said Sen. Hutto.
In a press conference Monday, Haley said she has no plans to testify in front of the committee.
The Senate Medical Affairs Committee is set to meet again on Friday at 11:00 a.m.
