SCDOT holds public information meeting on proposal to replace Shady Grove rd. bridge over I-26.
COLUMBIA -- Residents who live near the Shady Grove road bridge over I-26 in Irmo gave their input about the proposal to replace the bridge Tuesday night.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation held a public information meeting not far from the bridge at Dutch Fork High School. Project displays were up for residents to view. SCDOT officials also gave a quick presentation on the project and solicited feedback from residents.
"It's gone have to be done," said resident Stanley Fort. "Progress is one thing, but you can't get away from it."
"They say that our bridge is not sufficient enough to raise; they need to do a new one and we appreciate they're going to keep the lanes open and not have to do a detour while they're doing this change," said resident Diane Goodlet.
The bridge is being replaced as part of a interstate rehabilitation project. Officials say more clearance on I-26 underneath the bridge is needed and the best way to get it is by constructing a new bridge. Officials say if things go according to plan construction on the new bridge should start in the summer of 2012.
