COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina schools will conduct earthquake safety drills as part of a larger effort to make residents aware of the potential dangers of tremors.
Gov. Nikki Haley has proclaimed Monday the start of Earthquake Awareness Week. South Carolina experiences between 15 and 20 measurable tremors each year.
There was no damage reported during the August quake that shook up the East Coast, but people from Charleston to Rock Hill reported feeling the ground move.
In a letter to district schools, state Superintendent of Education Mick Zais says that because earthquakes provide no warning, it's important for schools to be ready in case a big one hits.
Schools around the state will practice earthquake drills on Tuesday.
