JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A cutback in civilian jobs ordered by the Air Force is expected to affect only a handful of workers at Joint Base Charleston.
Col. Richard McComb told reporters Friday the base is losing 147 positions. But McComb says 97 of those positions already are vacant. He says 22 of the people are taking early retirement.
That leaves 28 people who might lose their jobs. McComb says the Air Force will work with people and if there are any layoffs, they will not come before spring.
The Air Force plans to reduce the number of civilian workers at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter by about 30 positions.
Master Sgt. Kristina Barrett says those positions will be eliminated in the next three years. Some of them may fill vacant jobs.
