CONWAY, S.C. (AP) -- Horry County is seeking $20 million in federal money to upgrade a small railroad serving counties in North and South Carolina.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports the county is seeking money from the U.S. Transportation Department for the Carolina Southern Railroad, which has 94 miles of track.
The money would be used to upgrade bridges and track on the short line that serves industrial customers. Part of the work would consist of replacing ties so the line can handle heavier trains
The railroad currently is in its second self-imposed shutdown of the year. That's because there were problems found with some of the 187 bridges in the Carolina Southern system.
The line serves Horry, Marion and Dillon counties in South Carolina and Columbus County in North Carolina.
