COLUMBIA (WACH) -- You can now shop for free at your local BI-LO, all this thanks to a City of Columbia partnership with Coca-Cola highlighting the need to recycle.
Different cities and counties from across the area including the City of Columbia, Cayce, Lexington and others are taking part in the “Recycle and Win” program.
The program is aimed at bringing awareness to the importance of being eco-friendly.
Within the next few days an educational brochure will be mailed out to participating city neighborhoods across the Midlands.
When you’re getting ready to recycle, place the sticker from the brochure on your recycling bin.
A prize patrol driver will be driving through various neighborhoods and if you’re spotted recycling the right way, you'll be rewarded a $50 gift card to BI-LO.
Organizers say recycling is a win for everyone because it actually saves the local government money.
“The materials can be reused and it's better to reuse them to make them into other bottles and cans and other items then filling up the landfills. The cities and counties save money when they divert trash from the landfill,” says Lauren Steele, VP Coca-Cola Corporate Affairs.
The program officially launches November 7th.
