ORANGEBURG (WACH)-- Subway spokesman Jared Fogle surprised a Midlands student Tuesday, when the franchise announced two grand prize winners of the Frest Fit Challenge.
Kyiyah Stokes of Robert E. Howard Middle School in Orangeburg was one of the lucky winners.
Subway partnered with the Carolina Panthers for the contest. Participating students submitted a video or poster explaining how they stay “Fit like a Panther.”
Stokes’ poster outlined a healthy lifestyle including the right diet and exercise plan. Stokes won a $1,000 Subway gift card and a $1,000 fitness grant for her school.
Students cheered when Fogle showed up. He presented the prizes and shared his story about growing up overweight. He even brought in a pair of his old pants to show just how big he used to be when he weighed 425 pounds.
“Childhood obesity is a huge issue especially down here in the south,” said Fogle. “Kids are putting on more and more weight than ever before.”
Subway has awarded more than $25,000 in fitness grants since 2008 to help win the fight against childhood obesity.
