LEXINGTION (WACH) - Lexington’s high school football team trading in their pads and helmets for trays and aprons. The team working at Pizzeria Uno in Lexington to raise money for Alex's House, an orphanage in Haiti started by Lexington resident Bill Howard almost two years ago.
"I was in Haiti six days after the earthquake, and it was something like you've never seen," said Howard. "It just pushed the fast forward button. We knew we had to do something."
Howard says even before the devastating earthquake in January 2010, one out every five Haitian children never made it to their 5th birthday.
"We want to teach our kids it's not just about football, it's not just about them, it's bigger than them," said Lexington Assistant Coach Chris Hamilton.
Howard says every dollar raised will help put food on the table, help build permanent housing for nearly 50 children, and give them the tools to be successful.
"We teach all of our children a trade, so when they go out from under our care, they are fully capable of supporting themselves, and hopefully making a difference in their country," adds Howard.
The LHS football and cheer team raised $2,000 through their fundraiser. The total also includes money donated for each touchdown scored in the Wildcats 45-7 win over Aiken October 21st.
