CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- The Pickens County coroner says a 21-year-old Clemson student who was swimming with friends has drowned.

Coroner Kandy Kelley said that Prashanth Elangovan was swimming at Twelve Mile Recreation Area in Clemson at about 6:30 p.m. Monday when he went under and didn't resurface.

Kelley says divers found Elangovan and he was taken to Oconee Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead late Monday. Kelley thinks Elangovan was underwater for more than 20 minutes.

Kelley said an autopsy was being performed Tuesday.

The drowning was being investigated by the Department of Natural Resources and the Pickens County coroner's office.
