COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's inspector general has asked the State Law Enforcement to investigate two embezzlement cases at a state agency.
Inspector General Jim Martin said Wednesday the cases involve less than $50,000. He would not identify the agency because of the ongoing SLED investigation.
Martin says the funds involved include state taxpayer dollars. He says both had previously been reviewed by the agency. Martin says the agency didn't look deeply enough into the issues.
He says SLED is waiting for an audit at the agency before referring the cases to a prosecutor.
Martin has been on the job as inspector general since June and says his office has handled 55 cases.
That includes the two cases sent to SLED and three investigations of state spending and oversight practices.
