COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Former Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer is filing paperwork needed to begin a bid for a U.S. House seat along South Carolina's coast.

In a statement on Friday, Bauer said he filed paperwork for the contest next year with the Federal Election Commission.

The two-term Republican ran unsuccessfully for governor last year with a last-place finish in the four-way race for the Republican nomination. Bauer picked up 12 percent of the vote. Then-Rep. Nikki Haley nearly won without a runoff with 49 percent. He also served in the state House and Senate.

His campaign made news when he complained about generational welfare, which no longer exists, and blamed illegal immigration problems on lazy residents who don't want to work to harvest the state's crops.
