COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Columbia's first African American mayor, Steve Benjamin, has been placed in the top 100 list of most influential African Americans in the nation.
According to TheRoot.com, Mayor Benjamin comes in at number 46 on the list.
The website points to his hand in working to bring jobs to the area, along with new fuel technology, prisoner re-entry and making sure kids have basic dental care as reasons for his ranking.
The Root says Benjamin is out to make Columbia the "most talented, entrepreneurial and educated city in the Southeast."
Benjamin is ranked just below tennis great Serena Williams, CNN anchor T.J. Holmes and rapper Ludacris. Newark, NJ mayor Cory Booker came in at the top of the list.
