Authorities say Jeffery Cox led police on a high-speed chase along I-20.
KERSHAW COUNTY (WACH)-- A fugitive is back in jail after a high speed police chase that spanned three counties.
According to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, the department’s traffic unit was patrolling I-20 Tuesday when a 2006 Honda Accord blew through radar at 99 mph. Deputies identified the driver as 21-year-old Jeffery Cox. Cox was wanted on multiple assault charges in Cayce.
Sheriff Matthews says his deputies chased Cox into Lee County, where Lee County deputies also joined the chase.
Matthews says Cox’s car blew a tire on the interstate and he was forced to stop. Authorities say Cox then ran into a wooded area near the Lynches River.
After nightfall, law enforcement officers from Lee, Kershaw and Darlington counties maintained a perimeter while a SLED helicopter and a dog team searched the woods for Cox.
Shortly after 10 p.m., officers received a report that a person matching Cox’s description was seen at a convenience store in Lamar. Authorities arrested Cox after receiving the tip.
Sheriff Matthews says Cox will be charged with failure to stop for a blue light, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, expired tags, violations of ABC laws and speeding.
While he is currently in the Kershaw County Detention Center, he will eventually be turned over to the Cayce Department of Public Safety for the assault charges pending there.
