Staying warm safely as cooler weather approaches

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Cool fall weather is coming to the Midlands. This weekend, parts of the Midlands are forecasted to reach lows in the 40s. Columbia’s Fire Chief is reminding people to stay safe when they keep warm.

“If you are going to use your heater this year make sure you get it checked out get your filter changed, get a reputable dealer to come and out check make sure all your belts are tight,” says Chief Aubrey Jenkins.

Chief Jenkins adds space heaters can be a fire hazard if people do not keep an eye on them.

“Make sure when you use a space heaters or any kind of supplement heater than you keep it at least three feet away from anything that can burn keep children or pets from around it and do not place anything on top of it,” says Chief Jenkins.

He adds make sure your fire place is clear before you light a fire.
