Congressman Clyburn named 2011 Advocate of the year.
Columbia (WACH) -- South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn was honored Tuesday night in Columbia for his life's work.
Clyburn was named the S.C. Appleseed Legal Justice Center's 2011 Advocate of the year.
The number three Democrat in the House was recognized for his many efforts on behalf of the poor, including getting the federal health care law passed and directing 10 percent of Recovery Act funding to communities 20 percent under the poverty level for the past 30 years.
“It's a great honor and I’m very appreciative of it. I just hope I can live long enough to prove myself worthy,” said Clyburn.
“Want him to realize there are a lot of people in this state who truly appreciate his efforts,” said Sue Berkowitz, director of SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center.
The organization advocates for the state's homeless population. Each year, it recognizes a South Carolinian whose life work exemplifies a commitment to justice, families, and children in the state.
