Labor, Education departments team up to train unemployed

Two federal agencies are sending $20 million to South Carolina to retrain unemployed workers for jobs in emerging industries.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Two federal agencies are sending $20 million to South Carolina to retrain unemployed workers for jobs in emerging industries.

The State newspaper reported the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor announced the grants Monday.

Clemson University and 10 of South Carolina's technical colleges will share the funds.

Training centers will be set up at each school, which also will offer career assessment.

Central Carolina Technical College is Sumter is getting the largest grant at $2 million.

Florence-Darlington Technical College president Charles Gould says the money will allow the schools to help workers who often are overlooked.
