RICHLAND COUNTY (WACH) -- Officials in Richland County say they found a newborn child abandoned outside an apartment building Monday morning.

Deputies say they received a call about the newborn boy around 6 a.m. at the Enclave Apartments at 1800 Long Creek Drive.

The child was found left alone, wrapped in blankets.  The boy has been transported to Palmetto Richland ER.  It's unsure of his condition at this time.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department is investigating how the child got there and who the guardians are.

Sheriff Leon Lott reminds citizens who may be facing difficulties in parenthood that there is an infant safe haven law that gives mothers an opportunity to turn over their babies under one month old to a protected environment.  These places include law enforcement agencies, churches, fire stations and hospitals.

If you have any information that may help investigators, you're urged to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
