COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's House Republicans are considering ways to overhaul the state's tax system.

On Monday, they heard suggestions that included changing the way the state taxes homes and increasing South Carolina's gasoline tax.

Rep. Tommy Stringer of Landrum is the committee's chairman and said he doesn't think the idea of increasing the state's gasoline tax is going anywhere.

He said the panel will take public input at meetings during the next several weeks and present ideas to the Republican Caucus at its annual agenda-setting meeting. That meeting is usually closed to the public.

Stringer said after the meeting that Republicans will propose tax law changes for the session that begins in January.
