Design for new Darla Moore School of Business
 / USC
COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- Rain Friday forced the groundbreaking for the new Darla Moore School of Business indoors. The site of the future school is at Assembly and Greene Streets next to the Carolina Coliseum.
USC President Harris Pastides said, “We intend for this to a community building.”
The $106 million building will be more than classrooms. The building will include a lecture hall designed so the nearby School of Music can use it for performances. It will also include research labs and will have the flexibility to allow almost all classrooms to become distance learning centers. Its open layout with outdoor views will let in natural light to enhance productivity.
“We really want to build on that number one ranking we want to give young people an opportunity not only to see the great faculty and programs that we have but the beautiful building that can add to the quality of their learning,” Pastides said.
Once it opens by the end of 2013, staff hope it will be a center to enhance interaction and collaboration among students and the Columbia community.
The business school's old building will be renovated by the U.S. Justice Department, which is moving some of its U.S. attorney operations from Washington to South Carolina.
