COLUMBIA (AP) -- The University of South Carolina has established a scholarship in honor of a professor who police say was stabbed to death last month by her ex-boyfriend.

College of Education Dean Lemuel Watson said Friday that the Jennifer L. Wilson Memorial Scholarship will be given to an undergraduate specializing in middle school education.

The college is providing an initial gift of $2,500 to establish the scholarship, and will eventually contribute $5,000. Preference for the award will be given to students interning at high needs schools.

The university also is accepting contributions to the fund.

Wilson was found dead in her Columbia home on Aug. 28. Police say the 36-year-old professor and Fulbright Scholar was attacked by her ex-boyfriend, who is charged with murder.
