AIKEN, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a man wearing a dress has been shot in the face as he tried to rob an Aiken jewelry store.

Investigators said 20-year-old Dominique Fortenberry of Summerville came into Porky Bradberry's Jewelry around 1 p.m. Monday, set down a purse he was carrying and pointed a gun at the owner.

Aiken police say the men shot at each other. The owner was hit in the arm, while Fortenberry was shot in the face.

Investigators say they followed a trail of blood and bloody clothes to a neighborhood where a getaway car was apparently parked. Fortenberry was arrested at an Augusta, Ga., hospital after he had surgery.

It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
