COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH, AP) -- Advocacy groups markedthe 91st anniversary of women gaining the right to vote by recognizing leaders in South Carolina.
A coalition held a news conference Wednesday to honor women in South Carolina who fought for women's rights.
Mary Anne Jacobs, from the Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics, said, "Women bring a level of diversity that we see no where in South Carolina. The diversity of talent provides more ideas and perspectives and therefore delivers the best solutions."
Sponsors of the event include the League of Women Voters, Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics, the Alliance for Women, and South Carolina Women Lawyers.
The 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote was ratified Aug. 26, 1920. The date is designated as Women's Equality Day.
