COLUMBIA (WACH) -- More than a dozen trained American Red Cross disaster volunteers from Columbia are assisting in Hurricane Irene relief efforts from North Carolina to the New England area.
The Columbia Region American Red Cross has deployed 18 volunteers to help those suffering from significant flooding, wind damage, and widespread power outages all the way up the Eastern Seaboard after Hurricane Irene made landfall this past weekend.
Sunday, the Red Cross operated or supported approximately 340 shelters with more than 8,600 residents from North Carolina to New England. Since Friday, the Red Cross has provided more than 48,000 overnight shelter stays.
"This is a big disaster across multiple states, and the response will cost millions,” said Scott R. Salemme, regional chief executive officer, American Red Cross, Columbia Region. “If you can help, we encourage you to click, text or call to make a financial donate to American Red Cross Disaster Relief.” You can help those affected by disasters like Hurricane Irene by making a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your contribution allows the Red Cross to provide food, shelter, and other assistance in response to disasters. Visit the Red Cross website or call 1-800-RED-CROSS to donate.
The Red Cross is also asking for immediate blood and platelet donations in areas unaffected by this storm and asks that community members consider donating blood in affected areas once it’s safe to do so.
