RICHLAND COUNTY (WACH) -- Friday, the Richland County Sheriff's Department was a headquarters for helping children across the state learn values and life skills to keep them safe.
DARE officers and school resources officers picked up supplies at the department that will help them teach DARE programs in schools. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education is a series of classroom lessons that teaches children about drug prevention, decision making skills, and avoiding high-risk behavior. Friday, officers were given boxes of supplies including workbooks, certificates, and other items they will use to teach children DARE.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said, "We have to educate our children not only in math and English and science but also about the dangers that we've got out in the community and the DARE officers do that."
Fort Jackson staff stopped by the department to gather their supplies.
"We are just appreciative that they bring DARE to Fort Jackson, our kids are just as important as the outside kids, we want to show them values in life and keep them on the straight and narrow," said Tisha Fields,
Fort Jackson Director of Emergency Services.
