RICHLAND COUNTY (WACH) -- The Richland County Sheriff's Department has added to its arsenal.
Officials showed off the new Humvee at A.J. Lewis Greenview Elementary School Wednesday.
The vehicle was acquired through a government program, called 1033, that lets authorities buy used military vehicles.
Sheriff Leon Lott says over 140 volunteer hours were put into getting the rugged ride ready to serve the community.
How exactly will it be used to do that, you might ask. Lott says it will be used in parades, school presentations and youth organizations, as well as other community events.
Officials with the department say It’s such an interesting vehicle, people gravitate towards it to take a look.
The Richland County Sheriff's Department also owns a military tank, camera-equipped remote controlled helicopters and tactical SWAT vehicles.
The 1033 program is available to all South Carolina law enforcement agencies, with an emphasis on drug enforcement and counter-terrorism measures. In addition to tanks and Humvees, body armor, night vision, weapons and surveillance equipment is available.
