SPARTANBURG, SC (WACH, FOX Carolina) - A discussion about chickens brought the Spartanburg County Council to spar at Monday night's meeting.
Some council members saw a proposed amendment to an animal control ordinance was not worth their time, since it was prompted by a citizen who was cited for having chickens in his yard.
Two years ago, Spartanburg banned chickens, along with other animals, from residential areas.
Dr. Brian Rothemich brought his egg-laying hens to North Carolina, as he fights to get the city to allow the female animals as pets.
"It's been a very progressive movement, a lot of cities, Asheville, Atlanta, New York City, even our neighbor Greenville allows hen chickens in the city, a limited numbers, with restrictions I think is good. No roosters," said Dr. Rothemich.
The council voted to hold a closed workshop to learn more about the ordinance, and eventually have a public hearing to open the floor for public comments.
In 2010, Columbia City Council passed a measure that allows city residents to own up to four chickens, as long as they are kept in enclosed pens of a certain size on the property.
Residents must also pay an annual inspection fee of $5 per bird.
