COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina state senator is working to focus a review of the spending at the transportation department.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Bonneau Sen. Larry Grooms plans a meeting of the Senate Transportation Committee on Sept. 8 to look into agency spending.

Grooms says the committee will get a briefing from Transportation Secretary Robert St. Onge.

The transportation department this summer fell behind on contractor payments and loan payments to the state Transportation Infrastructure Bank.

Grooms says he expects to hear from transportation commissioners during the meeting.

Officials indicated last week they had enough money to catch up on late payments, thanks to advances from the Federal Highway Administration.
