MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE, AP) -- Authorities say a North Carolina toddler died in a South Carolina hospital after being run over by a lawn mower.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that 3-year-old Mario Deran Lewis Jr. of Tabor City, N.C., died Wednesday afternoon at Loris Community Hospital.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge says the boy died of head injuries.

It happened just before 4 p.m on West Third Street.

Edge says Mario was riding on the lawn mower with an adult, who stopped it and briefly got off. In that moment, the child fell off, and the mower rolled forward over the child.

Tabor City police are investigating. The Columbus County town is just across the North Carolina border and is less than 10 miles from Loris.
