IRMO, S.C. (AP, WACH) -- Homeowners in Irmo are seeking the town's permission to raise chickens in their yards.
The State newspaper reports that the Irmo Town Council agreed Tuesday to consider the idea, but Mayor John Gibbons warned supporters not to get their hopes up.
Supporters want to keep up to six hens in pens anywhere in the town of 12,000 outside Columbia. Currently, chickens and livestock are allowed only in undeveloped areas zoned as agricultural.
Homeowner Josh Smith says letting people keep chickens gives families a connection to farming, plus provides eggs for meals and compost for gardens. But development restrictions appear to ban the birds in several neighborhoods. Some council members say it's impractical to allow chickens if they're off-limits in much of the town anyway.
Do you think people should be able to raise chickens in their yards?
