MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) --  An early morning fire on the USS Yorktown did not stop the Lowcountry attraction from opening on time, that's according to Mac Burdette, Patriots Point Executive Director.

Officials with Patriots Point say their "state-of-the-art fire alarm system notified the fire department immediately" on Tuesday morning. Mount Pleasant firefighters responded around 12:45 to find a fire in the Graphic Arts room, that's just below the flight deck.  Crews on the scene say there was also plenty of smoke due to the fire that was quickly contained.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire with fire extinguishers and no water hoses were required.  After the fire was out, they worked on the ventilation on the ship.

In a statement released Tuesday morning, Burdette said, "The fire was in a print shop and completely contained there.  All the alarms worked perfectly, including sensors that indicate location."

Burdette says the fire caused about $8,000 in damage to the materials and printing equipment used to make posters, fliers and brochures.

The print shop is not included on the tour route on the ship.

Burdette also credited the Mount Pleasant Fire Department for its quick response.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital and treated for heat exhaustion, but he is expected to be fine.  Two others were treated on the scene for smoke related issues.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
