NEWBERRY COUNTY (WACH) -- Scammers are taking advantage of the nation's current debt crisis to get personal information from citizens.

According to the Newberry County Sheriff's Office, a caller will tell you that due to the default of the government, Social Security and Medicare are changing to protect you.

Deputies say these individuals will ask for your information so it can be verified to insure you will still get your check.

Sheriff Lee Foster reminds residents that Social Security and Medicare have not changed, and you should never give out personal information over the phone, except to a trusted healthcare provider.
