COLUMBIA (WACH) -- “Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese…”  Most Americans can finish this jingle from fast good giant McDonald's.  Through years of careful brand building what, the parts of a Big Mac have become common knowledge.  Since 1979, one of the other McDonald’s trade mark products has been the Happy Meal, marketed to children, consisting of a hamburger, French fries, drink and a toy.

Over the last 30 plus years, the Happy Meal has seen minor changes, including different toy selections, boxes, and the inclusion of healthier food choices such as apples instead of French fries.  The word “choices” is one that seems to be on its way out when it comes to Happy Meals.

McDonald’s announced on Tuesday, that they will begin cutting the portion of french fries, and add apples to every meal, taking away the customers ability to choose the side for their children.  The fast food chain says that the change will reduce calories by as much as 20 percent.

This change by McDonald's, which already offers nutritious options like oatmeal and salads, comes as fast food chains face intense scrutiny from health officials who hold the industry partially accountable for childhood obesity and other health-related problems.  Even with these changes, critics say that the changes don’t go far enough.

Additionally, they will work toward reducing sugars, saturated fats, and calories on its main menu items.

Do you want to choose what you feed your child, or are you ok with a restaurant making the choice for you?  Let us know by leaving a comment below, or on our FaceBook page.
