COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The NAACP's top officer is calling on South Carolina's first governor of color to bring down the Confederate flag that flies a stone's throw from her Statehouse office.

NAACP president Benjamin Jealous called Gov. Nikki Haley, whose parents are from India, a contradiction in his keynote speech for the civil rights organization's annual convention in Los Angeles on Monday.

Jealous compared slavery and segregation to oppression in India under colonial British rule and said Haley should ask what Gandhi would do. Haley was born in Bamberg.

Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey said South Carolinians compromised on the issue by moving the flag from the Statehouse dome and another move is not on the governor's agenda. He said he didn't expect people outside the state to understand that dynamic.
